MOTIVATION - It isn't just a job, it is a passion
Howard Schultz toasts at the launch of their new "everyday" brew, Pike Place Roast, April 8,2008, in Bryant Park in New York City. The simplest definition for motivation is internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested and accomplish to a job or role. Basically, it divided into two sections; they are financial rewards and non-financial rewards. According to accurate statistic, average of turnover rate of Starbucks is lower than other industries. This is because Howard Schultz as a leader of Starbucks has effective ways to motivate them. Howard Schultz treats employees as 'partners' or considered them as 'owners'. Starbucks 'partners' get motivated to contribute themselves and try their best mostly. Financial Rewards - Commission, Fringe Benefit, Profit Share As a Starbucks full time or part time 'partners' works more than 6 months and 20 hours in a week, they are awarded annual salaries, grant price of the stock and the profitability of the company. Moreover, they receive full health care benefits even though dental insurance, visual care and disability and life insurance in package form. Besides that, Schultz had set up a regular team building named as "Bean Stock". It gives opportunity to employees of Starbucks able to share the growth of Starbucks up to 14% of their salary and allows them to buy common shares of Starbucks at a discounted price of 85%. 'Partners' are greatly invited to join the retirement plan, receive free pound of coffee every week, price discount on Starbucks Merchandise including vacation time and personal day-off. Last but not least, I agree that what Schultz had done because employees are the most important asset to a successful company; I will be motivated if I receive those rewards from my boss especially, fringe benefits which satisfy humans needs and wants. In the other point of view, it is very difficult for a small company to motivate their employees because they do not have so much resources to invest on. Passion is one of the reason that everyone should own it to motivate ourselves. References Nelson, Bob. How Starbucks Is Offering Not Just Jobs but Careers. 19 November 2013. A. Thompson, JR., and A. TRAIN-TO-BE-THE-BEST - Starbucks represents something beyond a cup of coffee
Making training fun gives employees a reason experiences help the training to stick long after the production ends |
In business dictionary, training is defined as organized activity aimed at imparting information and instructions to improve the recipient's performance or to help him or her attain a required level of knowledge or skill.
All Starbucks'partners' start their careers with 24 hours of classroom training at one of the company's regional training centers if they are a newbie is required. In addition, Starbucks also pays for 'partners' who attend outside professional seminars and workshops as necessary. Both training methods are under off-the-job training.
While 'partners' are in training process, they can experiences to a wide variety of topics. They are retail skills, coffee brewing methods, customer service and even pouring the 'perfect' shot of espresso in 18 to 23 seconds. Those courses are thought by the assignable district managers, specialist, training managers who have all been through the courses or barista who have worked in a retail store up to two months. On-the-job coaching, trainees are immersed in the Starbucks family and culture through long periods of time after off-the job training courses to become an expert barista.
Besides that, managers have an additional 8 weeks to choose from, including "Coffee Knowledge 101," and workshops on conducting performance appraisals, recruiting, project managers and more depends on certain request.
Here is a paragraph for my opinions towards this subtopic:
Every small business owner gets by with a little help from their coffee cup. Whether you need a burst of caffeine to get you going in the morning, or you need that boost to survive the 3.00 pm slump or if you fuel up by constantly refilling your cup; coffee often helps small business owners on even their most stressful days. Starbucks would want to contribute themselves to serve beyond a cup of coffee to this community but not just earning money. Training program is required to brings this society luxurious coffee and luxurious lifestyle. Schultz considers Starbucks as a ministry of coffee more than a business.

RECRUITMENT - Let's be partners in Starbucks
"We want people to join Starbucks who have like-minded values. We need happy people - we're a people company that serves coffee, no the other way, around...If you don't believes we can do this, oryou don't believe in me, this isn't going to work- we're going to have a private conversation" Schultz said.
Recruitment is the process of finding and hiring the best-qualified candidate. The recruitment process includes analyzing the requirements of a job, attracting employees to that job, screening and selecting applicants, hiring and integrating the new employee to their organization.Be a Starbucks workers need to be
Adaptable, Self-Motivated, Passionate, Creative and Team-Oriented
Starbucks recruits through variety of ways for example, adverts printed and stick it in retail store, internet and a list of upcoming events on Early Career Page.
The poster above shows the requirements of Starbucks. |
This poster adverts shows the job description and job specification. |
The picture on the left side shows the application forms for Starbucks company. |
For me, I would like to work as part time 'partners' in Starbucks but not full time 'partners' in Starbucks. Normally, part time workers would not receive so much of benefits but Starbucks workers get it. In another point of view, working in Starbucks full time is not a long term plan for me. Because I will getting older and older every year and a Starbucks barista have age restrictions.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE- The way Howard Schultz Organizes Starbucks and Himself to Make It Popular and Successful
According to reliable statistic, they are thousands of Starbucks located in different countries around the world. In 1992. they are 165 number of stores in the world but now 2013, it increase rapidly to a number of 1,7572. Howard Schultz as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Starbucks, how he able to manage it? Basically, he divided into 9 major sections :
U.S. Store Development
U.S. Licensed Stores
U.S. Finance
Partner Resources
Marketing
In-Store Experience
Global Supply Chain
Global Communications
Partner & Asset Protection
"Looking ahead, the reality we face is both challenging because we are no overnight fixes," Schultz wrote. Management is a set of functions directed at the efficient and effective utilization ofresources in the pursuit of organizational goals.
Although plant managers and supervisors are responsible for the initial organization of the teams, partners are encouraged to take over the day-to-day workings of the teams including decision making. Cross-functional teams of partners and supervisors are used to make hiring decisions. Everyone on the team has a voice in the selection process and partners are encouraged to offer their views on the candidates’ potential compatibility with the company. The company’s "Mission Review Team"—comprised of partners from throughout the company—visits Starbucks outlets to review the consistency of the stores’ operations and the company’s guiding principle of providing quality service and products.
In my opinion, democratic is used in Starbucks Company and Howard Schultz always emphasize, the key point to success is to communicate. Every different sections stated above is leaded my a manager and they are employees follow under them. Schultz's always like to communicate one with another to gain a better relationship therefore find a solution to solve it. “Every step of the way, I made it a point to under promise and over deliver. In the long run, that's the only way to ensure security in any job.” Schultz said that.
This is Schultz's organization style but Starbucks' company does not show out his organization structure completely therefore the information here is also limited.

Leaders are born or made?
"In time of adversity and change, we really discover who we are and what we're made of" by Howard Schultz. Schultz was born to be a talented leader or he really work hard on himself ? If the leader was not born smartly, how he can success?
Scientists say that, " Great leaders are not born, not made: Their brains are just wired differently"
What about Howard Schultz's thought about this topic?
Schultz: "I believe life is a series of near misses. A lot of what we ascribe to luck is not luck at all. It's seizing the day and accepting responsibility for your future. It's seeing what other people don't see and pursuing that vision.
It means always think yourself possible and work hard on it whenever you meet difficulties and frustration。
Different types of management |
ATTENTION! Listen to Howard Schultz
Start everything by set up a goal for yourself, the goals of Schultz is "We're not in the business of filling bellies, we're in the business of filling souls". Schultz's goal is to build a different kind of company with a social conscience and a soul. "
I didn't come here to depress you, but I came here to speak the truth" Howard Schultz owns his personality strongly. He does not hesitate to use his influence to spread his ideas about corporations with a social conscience to the wider world. Because of his activism, he stated as Number 1 on Fortune's Businessperson of the Year list for 2011. Schultz understand about the concept, if you want your business to go all around the world, get worldwide customers, you need to involve yourself and your products in the community. Example: Schultz is a good communicator tolerate with each other therefore you can reach a balance and fulfill his needs.
As a conclusion, being a successful leader, you need to have your own visions and concepts, ability to look at all those potential that the others unable to.
In my opinion, I think Howard Schultz is an autocratic style leader the same time is also a democratic leader. He emphasize the keyword, diversity connect with his employees and customers, listens to their opinions and make improvement on it. Besides that, he has his own characters and personality, confident to himself and make decision sometimes. I admire Howard Schultz because of he is a 'multitasking machine' able to have most of the leader characters and works well in operating the entire Starbucks company.
